However, the smart fitness enthusiasts have found another option, adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells are just like normal dumbbells but they are built in a way that one pair can become many pairs. They have weight adjustment settings and your adjustable dumbbell set can go from 10 lbs. for one exercise and 50 lbs. for the next exercise within seconds. When people think of adjustable dumbbells, the names Bowflex and Powerblock come to mind for sure. They are definitely the most popular and best selling brands of adjustable dumbbells. Weight Settings

The various weight settings are definitely something that you have to look at when it comes to adjustable dumbbells. The more flexibility the dumbbells come with, the more useful they can be. The weight range of the dumbbells are also very important. The weight settings of the XMark Fitness adjustable dumbbells are between 10 and 50 pounds and they move in 10 pound increments. While each side of the dumbbell does actually move in 5 lb. increments, you will be using an unbalanced dumbbell if you go with weights such as 15, 25, 35, and 45. It is possible but not recommended. However, if you have certain exercise don't require a balanced dumbbell, these dumbbells allow for weight increments of 5 lbs.

To adjust the weight, you set it in its plastic holder and adjust the weight accordingly. While this may sound perfectly easy the first time of use, there seems to be a general consensus that there is a sort of 'trick' to get the dumbbells back into the holder to adjust the weight. This is a minor hindrance and it just takes a few times to learn the right 'jiggle' to get it back on the holder and adjust the weight safely. If you need to switch weights fast and easily while performing a workout program like P90X, these dumbbells are perfect for you!

Ease Of Use

The ease of use is sometimes an issue with adjustable dumbbells. Some people find them too bulky to use for some exercises. Some people don't feel that the way you adjust the weight isn't easy enough. There are also just other issues that people find with using something with moving parts instead of a normal hex dumbbell. However, the XMark Fitness adjustable dumbbells don't have any ease of use issues. It is true that the dumbbells are a little tricky to get back into the plastic cradle to store or change the weight. However, other than that, there is nothing but great things to say about this model!

Of course, the dumbbells are much wider than normal dumbbells, which can become an issue for some people, although you can adjust any exercise to work fantastically with these dumbbells. If you plan to use the weights in their 10 lb. increments, the ease of use is no more difficult than normal dumbbells. However, if you want the 5 lb. increments, you will be dealing with the unbalanced effect and the ease of use becomes less apparent.

Vs. Regular Dumbbells

The XMark Fitness pair of adjustable dumbbells are a definite step up from the alternative of owning the various dumbbell pairs between the weight ranges of 10 and 50 pounds. If you want the 5 lb. increments if those dumbbells, you are looking at 10 pairs of dumbbells, which are definitely going to take up some major space and become a more expensive option. However, the XMark Fitness adjustable dumbbells are not functional with 5 lb. increments. Instead, they only move in 10 lb. increments, something that the leading competition may have an advantage with.

Even though the XMark fitness adjustable dumbbells don't have as many weight increments, they still replace 5 pairs of dumbbells, which is still a considerable amount of space and the price of the adjustable dumbbells is still very affordable compared to the normal dumbbells. If you plan on buying static dumbbells in 10 lb. increments, you will be paying around the same price you would for the adjustable dumbbells if you want static dumbbells that are going to last you. Since the price range is around the same, it is a matter of convenience and ease of use, something the adjustable dumbbells definitely have the advantage in. Instead of pickup up a pair of dumbbells, dropping them back on the ground or the dumbbell stand (which is another feature the adjustable dumbbells have that static dumbbells don't), and picking up a new pair of dumbbells, you can just do your exercise, put the adjustable dumbbells back in the stand, switch the weight settings, and be done with that and ready for your next exercise!

Durability

If you are going to make a significant purchase, such as a pair of adjustable dumbbells, you are going to want them to last a long time. Normal hex dumbbells can last a very long time with the proper care, something that many people may realize when they are debating the route to go. Many of the top models are ridiculed for their lack of durability over time, such as many of the Bowflex models. Even though the XMark Fitness adjustable dumbbells are less known, they are much more durable.

The most important parts of the dumbbell are made of metal and many of the plastic parts are just their for the looks. In fact, many people who buy this set of adjustable dumbbells choose them over the more popular models because of their reputation for durability. Even though with the right care they can be great, there are some things to take into account. With many normal dumbbells, you can just toss them on the ground after a hard set of an exercise and not worry about them breaking. That is not something you can do with these dumbbells. This may be a turn off for the people that perform very intense workouts and don't have the energy to set the dumbbells down somewhat easily after an exercise. However, if you are not that person and can handle setting them down instead of throwing them, there is nothing to worry about!

Pros & Cons

XMark Fitness 50 lb. Adjustable Dumbbell ProsPros:

The convenience of these adjustable dumbbells over normal dumbbells are a great advantage of the XMark Fitness model. They save space and money.

The price of these adjustable dumbbells over the more popular models make them a great choice as well. In addition to being less expensive, they are more durable as well!

The ease of use with the XMark Fitness adjustable dumbbells is a good pro. You can change weight settings in less than 10 seconds and other than a simple issue with placement in the plastic holder, there isn't much that is going to confuse you when trying to use these.

XMark Fitness 50 lb. Adjustable Dumbbell ConsCons:

The bulky features on these adjustable dumbbells are annoying if you have always used hex dumbbells and like a small dumbbell to use. However, after a few uses, you should get used to it easily.

The fact that this model only have balanced weight increments of 10 lbs. leads to less versatility than other adjustable dumbbell sets, like those from Powerblock and Bowflex.
